Introspectrum is a light installation which generates rainbow by user interacting with prisms.

Obsessed with how sunlight refracts in nature and creates rainbow because of dispersion, my partner Yuqiao and I made this light installation to simulate a process of showing how light travels and disperses and generates rainbows. User can either enjoy the subtle changes of light or play with prisms to generate and erase rainbows themselves.

Introspectrum combines a plastic string sculpture with the light and rainbow created by one light source and four prisms. We hang more than 4000 plastic strings in a 30inch x 12inch x 18inch transparent self-made acrylic box to make the string sculpture which plays the role of the medium that visualise the path that light travels. The three prisms inside the box were connected to servos with calculated angles. They would keep rotating and refracting the light. The prism outside was connected with a potentiometer - people can rotate and play with this controller prism and see how light and rainbow changes in the box and create a light sculpture of your own.

* The LED light was placed in a designed dark enclosure with a slit to let the light out in order to create rainbow with prisms.
